Gays Have A Right To Marriage

In the following weeks, Congress will debate and eventually vote on an amendment banning gay marriage in the United States. While college students were not around for the persecutions of the Japanese during World War II, the women's suffrage movement in the early 1900s or the plight of blacks during the Civil Rights Movement, the future leaders of tomorrow have the chance to witness the discrimination of homosexuals in America.
Though gays in America pay taxes, protect this nation and contribute to the economy, they are seen by many as unworthy of sharing a matrimonial bond together.

According to the drafted amendment, "Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman. Neither this Constitution, nor the constitution of any State, shall be construed to require that marriage or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon any union other than the union of a man and a woman."
While the United States was founded on the principle that all citizens were created equal and that they deserve nothing less than life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, Congress has continually allowed blatant prejudices that have left a black mark on our history.

The reason these ridiculous injustices have been perpetrated is that many Americans are small-minded and closed off to something they do not understand. Those people stand behind their invisible moral authority and judge men and women who simply want to dedicate their lives to the people they love. Many members of the government find homosexuals undeserving of marriage because they stereotype them as sexual deviants living a life of sin. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights given to straight men and women including the right to marry and adopt children. No one, not even the government, has the right to tell a couple they are unworthy of marriage and a happy life together.
